This Is Also Legacy Work

When we hear the word legacy, we usually picture something big and external.

Wealth passed down. A name on a building. A company that outlives you. The kind of legacy that gets announced, measured, and remembered by a lot of people.

That's one kind. But it's not the only kind. And honestly, it's not the one I think about most.

What Is Legacy Work, Really?

Legacy work is the quiet, ongoing work of becoming yourself, and of building your life and your work on your own terms. It isn't only what you leave behind. It's who you are willing to become while you're still here, and whether you let that shape the things you create.

The woman who finally does business her own way instead of copying someone else's template. The one who stops performing a version of success that never fit and builds something that actually feels like hers. That's legacy work too. It just doesn't come with a plaque.

You Don't Have to Build It Their Way

So many capable women make the leap from being the exceptional employee to building something of their own, and then quietly try to become someone else to do it. Salesier. Louder. More polished. More "on."

I understand the pull. When you can't see it done your way anywhere, it's tempting to borrow someone else's.

I talked about this with Brie Stockwell on The Complete Creative Podcast, in an episode we called "Work Your Way: From Exceptional Employee to Entrepreneur — Building a Business Your Own Way." We kept landing on the same truth: the version that lasts isn't the one that mimics the experts. It's the one built on your values, your pace, and your personality. The more you make it yours, the more it works, and the more it can actually hold you for the long haul. (If you want the fuller story of how I stopped believing I wasn't "the entrepreneurial type," it's in "How I Built a Soulful Business.")

The Month I Set No Goals

Here's a small, concrete example of building my own way.

Recently I decided to set no goals for the month. No targets to hit. No outcomes to track. To a high-achieving woman, that can sound like giving up, or getting lazy, or losing discipline.

It was the opposite.

Instead of tracking outcomes, I practiced energy. I paid attention to how I wanted to feel while I worked, what I wanted to protect, and what actually fueled me. That practice was disciplined, protected, and completely legitimate, even though there was no number at the end of it to point to.

Because here's what I've come to believe: how you build is part of what you build. If you reach the goal but abandon yourself to get there, you didn't really build the thing you wanted. You built the pressure again, just with a nicer view.

Why Building Your Own Way Is the Legacy

The legacy isn't only the business, the clients, or the revenue. It's the woman you become in the building of it.

It's the self-trust you develop when you make a decision from your own full-body yes instead of someone else's advice. It's the integrity of a life that finally matches you on the inside. It's the example you quietly set for every woman watching, including your daughters, that you're allowed to do it your way.

That is also legacy work. Maybe the truest kind.

How to Know If You're Building Someone Else's Version

If you're not sure whether you've been building your way or borrowing someone else's, sit with these:

  • Do you measure your progress mostly by other people's metrics, offers, and timelines?

  • When you imagine doing it your own way, does a voice immediately say "that's not how it's done"?

  • Are you chasing goals that, if you're honest, you're not sure you even want?

  • Do you feel successful and slightly hollow at the same time?

  • If no one were watching or measuring, would you build it differently?

If those landed, you're not doing it wrong. You're just ready to stop performing someone else's version and start building yours.

When You're Ready to Build Your Own Way

If you're in the leap from exceptional employee to entrepreneur, or simply ready to build the next chapter on your own terms, that's exactly the work I do as a life coach for women, in my private 1:1 coaching and inside the Golden Coaching Certification™. Together we slow it down enough for you to hear your own full-body yes, so what you build actually fits you.

If you'd like to talk it through, a free connection call is a good place to start.

With immense appreciation & gratitude. Always.
