When You Can’t See the Path Ahead: Redefining Success and Finding What's Next
Most of us want the same thing when we're starting something new: a well-lit, well-paved path that many have traveled before and promises to get us where we want to go safely.
We want to see clear signage that says, You're going the right way. We want smooth roads, perfect weather, and no traffic jams. Ideally, we'd like to be in a self-driving car that just knows where to take us, effortlessly, efficiently, safely, all the way to our dream destination.
But that's not how it works.
As a life coach for women, I sit with this moment again and again. When you're doing something you've never done before, whether pursuing a long-held creative dream, stepping into a new role at work, or reinventing what life looks like after your children have moved out, there is no perfectly marked route.
And that's exactly where most people get stuck.
They think: I don't know how to do this. They look around for someone else's road map and try to follow what worked for others, hoping that if they copy all the steps, they'll arrive at the same result.
But the truth is, someone else's path will never feel quite right for you. Ever.

This Season Is Asking Something New of You
If you are a high-achieving, highly accomplished woman, chances are you've already forged new paths that others now want to follow. You've led before. You've created results from scratch.
But in this particular season of your life, the one that's calling you into something new, something deeper, something more, the road ahead may be more challenging to see.
And that's okay.
I talked about this exact season with Dana Grant on The Dana Grant Show, in a conversation about redefining success, reconnecting with purpose, and listening for what comes next when the old map no longer fits. So much of the work in this chapter isn't about finding a better map. It's about building the self-trust to walk before the whole road is visible.
Because sometimes, the path truly isn't visible yet.
Sometimes, all you can do is look for the breadcrumbs.
Breadcrumbs Are Small, But They Matter
So what do I mean by breadcrumbs?
They're the small moments of aliveness that tug at you. The spark you feel in your body when something lights you up. The quiet knowing that whispers yes before you can explain why.
A breadcrumb might be:
The surge of energy when you talk about an idea that's been on your heart for years.
The curiosity that won't leave you alone, the topic you keep researching, the project you keep daydreaming about, the thing you can't stop thinking about.
The tiny pull of jealousy you feel when someone else is courageously living into their calling, not because you wish them ill, but because something inside you says, That's what I want for me, too.
Breadcrumbs are the clues that keep appearing in your life. A book recommendation that feels divinely timed. A conversation that stirs something in you. An image or phrase that keeps repeating itself until you finally pay attention.
They're not random. These breadcrumbs are your direction signs, pointing you toward the entrance to the path. Your path.
Follow the Feeling, Not the Map
When you can't see the whole path, you don't need to.
You just need to take the next step that feels true. Pick up the next breadcrumb. This is the quiet heart of self-trust: collecting evidence that your inner navigation system is working and that you are, in fact, being guided toward something meaningful and authentic. (If you're someone who tends to overlook your own progress, I share a simple way to shift that in "Collecting Evidence of What's Working.")
You don't have to know where the path ends. You don't need to be certain of the exact destination. You just have to trust the breadcrumbs appearing before you.
These signals of curiosity, desire, and aliveness are already showing you the way.
For You
This week, I want to invite you to notice your breadcrumbs.
What are you curious or jealous about? What are you drawn to again and again? What feels quietly alive inside you, even if you don't have a plan for it yet?
You don't need a well-paved road. You definitely don't need certainty. You don't need the entire "how."
You need to be willing to follow what's true for you, one small breadcrumb at a time. Because sometimes the path only becomes visible when you start walking toward it. (And if you're sitting in the tender space between what was and what's next, you might also love "The Sacred Space Between No Longer and Not Yet.")
When You're Ready for Support
If you're in a season of reinvention, sensing there's something more but unable to see the whole path yet, this is exactly the kind of work I do as a life coach for women in my private 1:1 coaching and inside the Golden Coaching Certification™. Together, we slow it down enough to hear your own breadcrumbs, so you can build real self-trust and take the next true step, without waiting for the entire map.
With immense appreciation & gratitude. Always.
